the workshop

Flame and metal play the leading role in Stella Deligianni’s workshop.

The process by which shapeless grain metal is transformed into sheets and sheet metal into something that can be worn retains its fascination, even after many years. With alloys that she prepares herself, with her torch and her own special hammers, she crafts compositions through which she expresses her mental world, her thoughts and ideas, unfolding a personal narrative.

Most pieces involve a combination of traditional techniques that may engage with contemporary jewellery-makers’ methods and also with techniques that Stella has developed herself, to meet the needs of her designs.

The initial design idea, whether for a single piece of jewellery or a whole collection, flows directly from her innermost self and is clear and focused. However, Stella listens to her material and may in some cases allow it to lead her in slightly different directions.

Each piece is thus a collaborative effort, the result of the creator’s rapport with her material.

“In the workshop every day is a battle, not only personal but also, and primarily, collective. I owe a great deal to my invaluable associates, who are my comrades-in-arms in this daily battle. To Ritsa, who with her industriousness, patience, persistence and sense of technical perfection has accompanied me on every step of the way for the past twenty years. To Telemachos, my life’s partner, who looks after all our supplies, so that nothing is ever lacking during the process of production, and who also sees to all the financial and other obligations and requirements of the workshop. To Alexandros, our photographer, who knows just how to present every piece I create.”

When I hold the metal and the fire in my hands, my whole inner world, everything I experience, gives life to the inanimate material.

the collections

Minimality of form has been a characteristic of Stella Deligianni’s work from the outset. Over the years abstraction has given way to an increasingly Doric simplicity, resulting in striking creations.
